On 15 January 2026, Wikipedia celebrated the 25th anniversary of its founding in 2001. The English edition has grown to include more than 7 million articles—all written collaboratively by volunteers.

Wikipedia started as an ambitious idea to create a free encyclopedia, written by volunteers, for everyone in the world. It seemed impossible. Over 25 years, Wikipedia has become the largest collection of open knowledge in history. How did it happen? (1 min 30 s)

This is one of the best websites ever, and perhaps the best educational resource ever. I (and many other people) know so much because of Wikipedia, and I can gladly say that the total amount of time I've spent on here reading articles probably amounts to at least 24 hours or longer. I don't think I've ever gotten bored reading articles, and I find most articles to be wonderful and beautiful. Many articles have been around for at least a decade and have gone through TONS of changes, and their revision histories beautifully reflect the combined effort of everybody who cared enough to edit, and formulate one great article that is consistent in style with the rest of the articles. This website (or, rather, encyclopedia) is older than me... Sorry if that makes anybody feel old, all good faith here. But wow. Wikipedia (and Wikimedia's projects in general) will always be valuable to me in inconceivable ways. I hope I can give it the love it deserves...and I plan to commit time throughout the next years (how many years? who knows. maybe I'll be here for it's 50th!). This place makes me feel valuable in the strangest ways. Ever since I found Wikipedia, I've always gone to Wikipedia for knowledge. Random fun facts is found almost everyday from Wikipedia (Maaaybe not, but you get the idea.). When asking ChatGPT about something, I will later ask it to send me a Wikipedia link about it. Wikipedia articles may be long, but it's still entertaining (Yes, I'm a nerd). Wikipedia is my No. 1 source of information. I already know that I can contribute to Wikipedia, but only recently have I registered and contributed to Wikipedia, and only then do I realize how limited articles regarding things in my country is, and now I've made 65 edits, and none of them felt like hard work!
